With Be My Eyes you can call a sighted volunteer speaking your language. Our volunteers are available 24 hours a day to get you the information you're looking for or assist you in solving a task. The volunteers come from all over the world and speak more than 185 languages, so you can always get assistance in a language you speak fast and efficiently.
What language does the volunteer speak?
You will be connected to a volunteer based on the language you speak, so you will always speak the same language. We'll always try to connect you to someone speaking your primary language first. If you have added a secondary language, we'll connect you to someone speaking your secondary language in case there are no available volunteers speaking your primary language.
How long does it take to get connected?
When you make a request for assistance in the Be My Eyes app, the app will need a bit of time to connect you to a volunteer or company representative. Most calls are connected within 15 seconds, but sometimes, it can take up to a minute.
When waiting to connect, it might feel like it takes a long time to connect, because we're used to the almost instant connection of a phone call. As the Be My Eyes app needs to select a batch of volunteers, send a notification to the volunteers, wait for someone to answer, and then connect, it naturally takes longer than a regular phone call. If no one from the first batch of volunteers answer, the process will start over until connected to a volunteer. We contact several volunteers at the same time, to limit the time you have to wait for a connection.
If you're not connected within a minute, we advise you to end the call and try again.
Backgrounding the App during Call
If the volunteer or company representative tells you that you have backgrounded the app, it means that you have accidentally exited the Be My Eyes app while on the call, and it is now running in the background of your phone. Unfortunately, the volunteer or company representative loses the connection to your camera feed, and their screen will be black. Luckily the solution is simple - just navigate back to the Be My Eyes app, and they will regain the connection to your camera feed. There is no need to end the call and make a new one.
